Up north farmers' market

August 22, 2017

We're entering into my favorite 2 1/2 months of the whole year. Mid-August to the end of October. Favorite, weather-wise, that is. Low humidity, highs in the 70s during the day, high 50s at night, perfect for sleeping with the windows open. Love it.

Michigan can be so humid in the summers, and so gray and cloudy in the winters. We have no spring here. Just snow, then heat and humidity.

So I savor this time.

It's so hard to find a good peach. There's a small window, and when they're good, they're wonderful!

My friend and I split this peach pie for lunch one day. Yum. We got it at the Harbor Springs farmers' market.

Locally spun yarn.

Heirloom tomatoes always look a little wonky. But delicious in a BLT.

Hope you're enjoying these lovely days of late summer.

  1. Beautiful images of a lively Farmer's Market. I was quite taken with all of them and the vivid color, but especially #5 with the sweet church in the center of the photo. I am waiting for cooler weather here, but there is that subtle August change in the air I can sense. It's so humid in the mornings but the afternoons are dryer and the crunch under my feet is starting as early leaves fall to the ground. I think fall is the most welcomed of seasons because the summers are so, so hot.

  2. What a feast for the eyes in this post! This time of year is rich with colour. The peach pie sounds wonderful, and how fun to share with a friend. The mornings now are chilly, and I wear a sweater, but soon the sun burns warmth into the air and it's back to summer wear.

  3. Oh my! What beautiful pictures! We are lucky enough to be able to visit a farmer's market every Saturday morning. The produce is so good, and the vendors really friendly.
Your weather sounds similar to ours in the DC area. Summers are hot and humid! I've lived here all my life, and still am not used to it. We do get a definite Spring, but Winter is grey and barren here. Autumn has always been my favorite season.

  4. Oh, my, might be the most beautiful pics I've seen on a blog post!!! I felt like I was at the Farmer's Market. And, sharing peach pie with a friend, awe, so sweet (literally and figuratively). I love autumn too!!!!

  5. What a beautiful post Deborah! You caught some wonderful images of the market and all that fresh produce looks delicious. I get disappointed with peaches around here. They never seem ripe enough when you buy them and then don't seem to ripen properly just sitting on the counter. But I sure do love a good, fresh, fully ripened peach!

We've had SO much rain this summer that I don't feel I've had quite my limit of sunshine. However, the humidity has been much less than other years, so that's been a relief. I'm not ready for fall yet, and will happily take another month of summer please ;)

  6. What a fun outing! Now I've got a craving for peach pie...I've been meaning to go to our local farmer's market, but I keep missing it.

Too bad that your paper thingy didn't work. I didn't have the proper viewing glasses so I kept my eyes firmly on the ground! Your cat's tea-spilling behaviour during the eclipse was strange.

  12. Oh yes, I could have written that first paragraph! It's exactly how I feel about this time of year through October. LOVE the weather and nights with the window open, at least a crack. I haven't had peach anything yet this year and I think I'd rather have peach in the form of pie than just about anything else. IF it's a good crust. I think I need to make a trip to the farmer's market too. Beautiful produce photos! So glad you watched The Four Yorkshiremen. It's one of my favorites. :-)

  13. Beautiful market displays! We are lucky here in that our market is open year round - both indoor and outdoor.
DId I read that correctly...you & a friend split the peach pie for lunch, lol?! You're my kind of girl, for sure!

  14. There's nothing like a great Farmers market and you certainly hit upon a beautiful one. My goodness...Your photos would look gorgeous in a magazine!
Your post reminded me of the days when we lived in Ontario and enjoyed the fresh fruits and vegetables.
Growing up in the Rocky Mountains I never knew what fresh was until I went to Canada and it was a whole new experience for me. My husband says "the fruit here has no taste, looks good, but no taste to it" and he is so right, but of course that's all I knew.
Did you treat yourself to some of that locally spun yarn? I sure hope so. :-)
We too have a very small window for peaches here and now those are grown locally and DELICIOUS!! In fact, I was just telling my husband that I need to go to the farmers market this Saturday and get some to preserve. I would always do up peaches for dad as they were his favorite, now I just do up a few in memory of him and share them with others. With looking after mom I have missed out on the berries and my jam preserving so I don't want to miss the peaches.
That peach pie looks lovely and I'm sure it was delicious.

Have a happy day, sweet lady~

  16. Dearest Deborah,
You are so right about that part of the year. We too look forward to less humid weather and less hot. For our biking trips we really appreciate that! What a lovely series of photos you show here. Love the colors and yes all fresh fruits are only in season for such a short time... Let's enjoy it while we can.
This year I've so enjoyed the thick, sweet and juicy cherries. It must have been an extra good year.
    Hugs and happy weekend.

  17. Your pictures are prettier than a tour through an art gallery! All those marvelous colors. I can never find radishes as pretty as those and have been wanting to make a radish soup.

You are right about the weather during the coming time period. I wonder if there is anywhere on earth where the weather is like autumn year round? I guess I would take it for granted then though. Maybe it takes July and August to really make me appreciate autumn.

  18. Beautiful photos! Esp. the flowers and the yarn :) When I look at that produce, I think what hard work goes into making broccoli that good! Enjoy your pretty months. Down here, the pretty months are October and November. Sometimes it extends into December.

  19. What a beautiful post Deborah! I loved all the vivid fun colors, and I agree with you that the fall season is really the best! I do love and cherish all the seasons of the year, but the colors in fall are the best! My garden is in full mode production right now, and I am harvesting a lot of produce from it, so much work, but so worth it. Enjoy the harvest season, it is truly a delight :)

  20. Wonderful photos of the farmer's market with all the delicious fruits and veggies. I love the shot with the little church at the end - so sweet. I love this time of year, too. There's a little hint of fall in the air and the scent of ripe apples and hay make me giddy. Enjoy these lovely late summer days. xo Karen

  21. Hi Deborah, Love the photos from your visit to the farmers market. Nothing better then fresh beautiful fruits and veggies home grown locally. We are so ready for fall here too but we'll have some heat for awhile yet. However, you can feel fall in the air so I think it is trying to arrive soon.
Wishing you a nice long Labor Day weekend. Hugs, xo
