Sock woes

September 25, 2016

I was literally in tears the other day. Over a sock.

I mentioned in a previous post that I was learning to knit socks. My mom helped me get started when she was here for the wedding, but I was able to do most of the ribbing, heel flap, heel turn, and the beginning of the gusset all by myself. (With a little help from You-Tube.)

I was so pleased with how things were turning out. It was like magic.

But I made a mistake and ended up with a small hole. I debated about what to do, and thought maybe I would just darn it up after I was done. But it was bugging me. I should have listened to that little voice telling me I was headed for even bigger problems.

I've now ripped it down past the lowest needle here.
Fixing knitting mistakes is no picnic. I ended up unravelling literally hours of work, after attempting several times to pick up stitches with no success.

I really am thinking I should just rip the whole thing out. I've discovered a couple dropped stitches back toward the beginning of my work. Really?

Persistence. Patience.

This sock will not defeat me.

In happier news, I am on the pumpkin bandwagon with everyone else these days.

Happy Fall! Best time of year.

  2. Hello Deborah, I really give to you for trying to knit socks. That is one thing I have not done yet. It looks really hard. My mom makes them all the time too. Perhaps you can start all over again but not rip out if you have mistakes and just use it as the first attempt at making them. I wish you luck and this will take a lot of practice to learn. We all make mistakes in knitting and crocheting. Think of as you are just learning and try to enjoy it. Take care and happy fall.

  3. I have crocheted some this week but I don't dare try to knit. I never learned very good...way back when! You sure have beautiful colors and I know you'll figure it out. In the meantime...pass the chips! lol Hugs!

  4. Right. It's only a sock AND fifteen hours of work. Yikes. You know, I'm such a lazy cuss that I would have tried to fix it later. It would never have been right and I never would have gifted the socks nor worn them so you are doing the absolute right thing. Pumpkin chips? Any good?

  5. Yeah...I guess I would have darned up the hole...lol! I have done a couple of knitting projects but nothing quite as tedious as socks so I have to hand it to you, girl! And yes, pumpkin anything is pretty much at the top of my list right now. I've never had those chips but they look pretty interesting!

  6. What a shame, but worth all the effort in the end. I have never come across those chips before they certainly sound good. Take care.

  7. Dearest Deborah,
Oh my, this brings back memories of my hours of 'reversed knitting' in the past.
It is no fun and it is straining your eyes and oh so tedious.
But I'm very proud of you for being able to knit socks.
One day you will show us the end result with pride!
    Hugs and happy tortilla eating.

  8. Oh dear Deborah, maybe that's why I like to crochet!! I'm sorry about the sock woes, but hope you've worked through it.
What a sweet memory, in your previous post, about your grandma...loved the story, sweet friend! xo

  9. Hi Deborah, I so understand how it goes when you make a mistake and then have to rip out all those hours of work. I'm really not a knitter like my grandmother was but can accomplish a straight stitch for some scarfs etc. I love to crochet and find it easier for me. haha
I know you will accomplish these socks and they will be beautiful. Have fun and best of luck. Blessings for a great week. xo

  10. Knitting socks is building your character, Deborah. I gasped with delight when I saw the pumpkin chips. I must add this to my quest for all things pumpkin!

  11. I'm so sorry! What you say is utter truth: picking up stitches onto your needle is NO picnic! I'd much rather pull out rows of crochet than rows of knitting. I'm no good at it, and no good at getting them all back on the needle the right way. I hope it works out for you!
