Snowed in

February 12, 2016

I'm up here in northern Michigan visiting a friend, as wind chill warnings and blowing lake effect snow keep us hunkered down in front of a crackling wood fire.

I drove up on Tuesday in less-than-ideal conditions . . .

. . . and may now be snowed in up here for a while. See you in the spring, honey!! (My husband is home, hard at work during a busy tax season.) Wind chills are expected to be -15 to -30 through Saturday.

Last night three of us friends made the trek out to Moose Jaw Junction, recently voted best bar in northwest Michigan. It's in the middle of nowhere, and the parking lot is often filled with snowmobiles in the winter and motorcycles in the summer.

We had fish and chips in front of the fire, followed by brownie sundaes. Good comfort food.

This is the kind of drive we had on the way there . . .

People are tough up here. They all have tow straps in their cars and routinely pull each other out of ditches.

And here's a visitor we get every day . . .

A beautiful male pheasant.  He seems to be solo, so my friend is going to mail order a flock of pheasant chicks in the spring. He'll have a real mail-order bride.

  3. Peaceful images. Stay warm, my friend. We're still having spring temps in my neck of the woods, but February can be deceiving like that. We will see cold temps again, I'm sure ... just no snow.

  10. Awesome post. And being born in Michigan, I love it - we always went to northern MI or the Upper Peninsula on mini vacations when we were little.

Growing up on Lake Erie I know all too well the "establishments" with the snow mobiles parked in front - funny you mentioned that, haven't thought about that in years. : - )

Glad you had a get-away, enjoy yourselves much. Hugs. Tell the ladies HI from Ohio!

  11. Lovely views of your snowy situation and how handsome that pheasant is. We are to go below zero with wind chills below that this evening but I know that some states have it worse and you are in one of them...luckily with a friend and fellowship :)

  15. Dearest Deborah,
Wow, you are really in the snow and cold! Looks like our work days in North Dakota, one January... with -40 F real temperature. NEVER again as I came away with a six week lasting bronchitis.
But nature sure looks gorgeous and that pheasant is a bonus too. Hope he gets a bride in the spring.
    Hugs and stay toasty warm.

  19. Oh friend, what a beautiful place! The road with snow looks so enchanting :) I went to college in Wisconsin and made some good friends while attending school there. These friends lived in Michigan and it was always fun to drive home with them as I find Michigan to be quite beautiful, and of course it reminds me of Canada which is where I lived for several years.

Anyway, thanks for sharing, dear one. Hugs to you!

  21. Such gorgeous photos. When I was 20, I had the opportunity to travel to Germany with my parents at Christmas. Your photos remind me of the snow scenes there! John is from Detroit MI originally and is happy to live in the South now!
