Too many choices . . .

October 13, 2016

I'm in the midst of a kitchen and powder room renovation.

Between that and the stink bugs and all my daughter's stuff piled up in the living room waiting to be picked up to go to her new home, it's a bit chaotic here.

The Keurig is on the shoe rack in the laundry room, and we have a toaster on a table in the living room. (That's all we can make here. Tea and toast. Not bad, actually. My favorite things.)

I'm stepping over dishes and boxes, trying to vacuum and sweep up the extra dust, and feeling discouraged at some weight gain from eating too much takeout over the past couple weeks.

I'm not complaining, really. It's going to look beautiful.

But I do wish I was a little better at decision-making.

I need to pick out lights and a mirror and hardware. And paint colors.

Who knew there were so many options?

I went to one website and typed in chandeliers. Over 37,000 results. Put in your filters, and you still have a few hundred. Multiply that by several sites (you have to compare, right?), and that's a lot of chandeliers. Then there's kitchen island pendants, bathroom mirrors and lighting, and more. Then try to get them to all look good together without being too matchy-matchy.

I've spent days looking at this stuff online. My head is spinning. Mr. Beautiful is quite tuckered out by the whole thing.

This is the chandelier I finally decided on to go over the kitchen table.

From here.
I wasn't looking for this. I just stumbled on it. And funny, because when I was picking out countertops and backsplash a couple months ago, this candle holder was my inspiration piece for colors . . .

This quartz looks kind of green in the photos. It's not. It's actually got a slightly (pink) cast. (I'm hoping my husband hasn't noticed that.)

*****

In knitting news, my instructor didn't show up for the first class.

A very nice lady in the store overheard me talking about trying to learn to knit socks, and spent about a half hour with me. She gave me some good tips. Lots of great people all over. So I am soldiering on, with her encouragement . . .

I made the mistake the other day of entering the election fray on Facebook. I think I'm better off knitting and drinking tea. Much more peaceful.

  1. Oh too bad your instructor did not show up...I have joined a knitting group and went for my first session this week and it was such fun! We meet at a local cafe buy pots of tea and knit. There are expert knitters in the group to help those of us who are struggling. We sit and knit for about 2 hours...all lovely ladies and many were wearing sweaters and scarves that they knit themselves!

It is a challenge living in a home while major renovations are being done...I empathize, but you just wait as it will be so worth it!

  2. It will all be worth it in the end, I love the chandelier. Looking forward to see where you hang it. Well done for persevering with the knitting another thing that will be worth it in the end.

  3. I just love the chandelier you have chosen. BTW, you can always get away with pink with husbands if you tell them it's just "dusty rose." Sounds so much better to their ears. We both must have had chandeliers on the brain. My latest post talks about the crystal chandeliers at the Metropolitan Opera. They do sell replicas, if you're interested LOL.

Cheers and good luck. It will all be worth it in the end.

  4. Deborah, I can totally relate to the head spinning, and we've only just begun our process of updating our kitchen and renovating our master bath. Your kitchen choices look almost exactly like what I'm looking at! You've chosen well with the light, in coordinating to the counter and tile. Good job!

  5. Looks like you're off to a wonderful start. Your choices are lovely! Can't wait to see your final reveal (I promise it WILL happen: just hang it there!) I want so badly to renovate the bathroom off the master bedroom, but it is so tiny, and it needs some really creative ideas! Just take and deep breath and power on: it will be so worth it when you're done! Rosie

  6. Knitting and rinking tea definitely sounds more peaceful {{smiles}}

I can understand the overwhelming feeling of making decisions during this time of renovation...thinking of you, dearest Deborah. I know it will al come together and already you're making beautiful decisions. The chandelier is quite stunning.

Have a blessed and relaxing weekend. Love and hugs!

  7. Mr. Beautiful will never notice the pink unless you paint the walls with a hint of pink LOL
The light fixture looks very much like your candle of inspiration!
I can just see the mess you are dealing with now, but it will all be worth it. I do think kitchen remodels are really the hardest as we both know the kitchen is the heart of the home.
It truly is a good idea to have a teacher when learning new things, some things we can figure out ourselves but it really helps to have hands on instruction.
PS. I did call you and left a message!
Hugs, and hang in their, can't wait to see the finished results xo Roxy

  8. Ooh I love the chandelier and counter choices, Deborah! I'm sure it's all overwhelming. I think paint choices are really hard!
I'm glad you got some help with the socks. Happy weekend, my friend! Xx

  10. Hi Deborah, I know it can be overwhelming making all the design pieces come together and it surely helps to have some inspiration pieces like you share here. I love the chandelier and the tones of neutrals in the shades. Your kitchen is going to be beautiful. We are nearly done with our two bathrooms. Just a few more details and the frame less shower glass in about a week more. Everything else is done. Now I'm having fun decorating. Enjoy the process and have fun. Looking forward to seeing your pretty kitchen. Have a great week ahead. xo

  11. Oh, Deborah, your chandy looks wonderful! It looks a lot like mosaic tile. I have a few things in my home made with mosaic tile; two coffee tables, a wishing well, a magazine rack, etc. Some of these things my parents made and some I made years ago. Your chandelier and candle holder would be a perfect accessory to these. Yours of course are glass tiles so the light shines through. Very, very pretty! I haven't been renovating but we did paint last spring and now we're purging because we hope to sell next year. It can be overwhelming. Yours sounds like a lot more fun. Enjoy your knitting and your tea and don't be overly concerned about the weight. You're beautiful inside and out!

    Hugs,
    Sandi
