Coffee and conversation

Whenever we had a large, heavy meal or exceptionally rich dessert, which was infrequent, my mom would always say, "coffee and conversation tomorrow."

That's what I'm doing today. Although there's no one here to converse with. Except Miss Read.

Bought this book used on Amazon; love the library card still in it, appropriately stamped "Village Branch."
Black coffee is on the docket today as yesterday was an all-out sugar and carb fest in celebration of my daughter's birthday. First, we went to a place called The Breakfast Club.

This is what we ate.

And you know how "your sins will find you out"? A local TV news station was on site filming for a weekly segment on local restaurants. No kidding. They asked if they could film us while we ate. On Thursday, yours truly will be live, stuffing myself with french toast! I can't wait to see it. Not.

After a day of shopping, we hit up The Cheesecake Factory for -- wait for it -- pasta and cheesecake.

It was an altogether satisfactory day, but today I'm glad to be back to my healthy lifestyle. No leftovers or doggie bags here to tempt me. And the really great thing is that I don't think I'd even be tempted. I'm realizing how much better I feel eating real, whole foods. I'm thankful for my salad today.

It will be quite a while before I want to do this again, and isn't that the goal?

  1. You are doing awesome! Who says a girl can't have a little treat every now and again?? And what a treat...the french toast looked AMAZING! Hehe...this remindes me of a recipe I saw somwhere over the weekend...bacon and cream cheese stuffed french toast!! Love that sweet library book :)

  2. I am reading Winter At Thrish Green at the moment...I picked up some of my hard to find Miss Read books in England...always had a list with me! Goodness...that breakfast indeed looks deadly. So glad you are doing so well!

  6. Congratulations on your move to a more healthful diet. 16 lbs ! Oh I am encouraged to get myself back on track. Enjoy your lovely vintage Miss Read. I learned about her from Ruth at Antiques and Teacups at Christmas time and was lucky to find some at Goodwill. The french toasts looks sooooo good with all those fresh strawberries!

  8. Well I must say the stuffed french toast looks so awesome! Who could resist? It's fun to splurge every now and then, but then get back on track. Wish I could see the film! I haven't heard of your book. Please let us know if it's good!

  10. Oh my goodness, your French toast looks amazing, Deborah! I don't think it hurts us to once in a while enjoy something decadent, and indeed that did look decadent. I have decided to try and bake something once a week for Hubby to enjoy. It also helps if company drops in. But I know what you mean about eating healthy. One always feels better when we indulge in our favourite green salad or fruit and raw veggies for a snack. I know I always feel better. Congrats on your weight loss, you must feel amazing!   11. Hi Deborah, Happy Birthday to your dear daughter. I think it is great you planned a fun feast and enjoyed it after your hard work and weight loss.   16. Hi Deborah, wow Happy Belated Birthday to your daughter! It must of been so much fun going out together yesterday to celebrate! I love the book with the old library card. Love the food you ate but yes it is nice to do on special occasions! Congrats on all of that weight loss. What a great accomplishment.

  19. You've done well with your weight loss and the odd splurge can't possibly do too much harm. It sure did look decadent!
    I'm back using Fitness Pal which I find helpful and we went to a restaurant for lunch one day last week. I usually order a salad and luckily all their salads were listed - wasn't one under 700 calories! We'll be avoiding that place and finding another that has healthier food, or at least smaller portions.

    Sounds like you and your daughter did enjoy great soul food and some sinful sweets on her special day and that's what life is all about! Those are meant to be the highlights.

  21. I think I gained weight just looking at those luscious pictures! Happy Birthday to your daughter. I loved seeing that old library card. It brought back so many memories of happy days spent in the cool, quiet confines of the local library. Just getting a library card as a kid was a BIG DEAL. It made you feel like a grown-up.

  23. Yes!! Good for you. I know just what you mean. After a while (months, I guess) of eating healthily, the occasional sugar/carb feast is not quite so satisfying as it was before, and it doesn't taste or feel so good. It's a great relief to both mind and body to return to salads and veggies and water and tea. Ymmm. You are on your way!!
